Dr. John "Jack" Lohman, 95, left this world and was greeted in the next on July 12, 2017. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and mentor to generations. Jack was the very definition of patriarch for many families.
A native son of Butte, MT and resident for most of his life, he was born on August 26, 1921. Jack was the third of five children born to Frank and Bessie Lohman. He attended Boys Central, Carroll College, and Loyola Dental School in Chicago. He is preceded in death by his siblings: Francis, Marguerite, William, and Alice, his eldest daughter, Linda and his beloved wife, Bernadine.
The leading role as St. Nick in a seventh grade Christmas play would forever change his life, when he was cast across from Bernadine Maddox, playing the part of Mrs. Claus. Jack and Bernie's relationship grew from co-stars and classmates to boyfriend and girlfriend, and after their wedding in 1944, to husband and wife for sixty-nine years. Jack and Bernie had four daughters: Linda, Mary Ann (Don) Phillip, Julie (Tom) Zahn, and Jackie (Scott) Smith, three sons-in-law, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. His life was like the plot of a storybook and a favorite tale of his family about true love and devotion.
Jack was truly a "Jack" of all trades. A dedicated dentist, he also served as president of the Montana Dental Association, and worked at the children's homes in Twin Bridges and Boulder. After retiring from his dental practice, Jack began a second career as the Executive Secretary of the American Dental Association. Outside of his professional life, he had many other talents and hobbies that he delighted in and excelled at. He was a rancher, hunter, fisherman, pilot, artist, miner, plumber, carpenter, electrician, and boat captain. A self-taught tinkerer, Jack could fix just about anything and never stopped learning. At 95, he had a cell phone and Facebook page, made cards for every occasion on his computer, loved to Skype, and was a master of the chain email.
As a snowbird and later full-time resident of Yuma, AZ, he defied the odds and lived a healthy, independent life for over four years after Bernie's death in 2013. Jack was a man of deep faith and character, who drove himself to daily Mass until the very end, usually followed by a trip to Walmart, daily phone conversations with each of his daughters, and visits with the neighbors. He was beloved and respected by his dear friends and fellow Yuma residents.
Jack frequently remarked how his greatest accomplishment was his family. Holiday get-togethers and reunions were precious to him and a favorite topic of conversation. In his death, his "great accomplishment" will live on and flourish as they draw together to grieve the man they loved and to celebrate his reunion with Bernie and Linda.
