Louis Francis Bulcher

KIMBERLY • Louis F. Bulcher of Kimberly, Idaho, passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Versailles, Ohio, on Jan. 1, 1918, to Martha and Clarence Bulcher and was the first of nine children. Eight years later in 1926, his family made the trek across country and settled in Castleford. The family had heard about the many farming opportunities available in the Magic Valley and also about the clean, clear air of our high desert area.
On Dec. 7, 1941, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor occurred when Dad was employed by the McClellan Air Force Base of Sacramento County, Calif. McClellan was a logistics and maintenance facility for a wide variety of military aircraft, equipment and supplies. Just a few months later, when his father died, Louis was asked to return to Kimberly and help his mother and sisters on the family farm.
In 1942, he met and fell in love with LaVon Larsen. They were married on New Years Eve 1942 at St. Edward's and raised their family of six children on a farm north of Kimberly. As time went on, Dad acquired more land and worked hard to make his farm one of beauty and prosperity. He was a man of the earth in so many ways. He was an accomplished farmer and mechanic. He was a neighbor in the truest sense of the word. He helped many of his friends with mechanical problems on their machinery and was always available to them when help was needed. He was the longest standing member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Edward's, having received a plaque for 70 years of service in 2013. He served his community by being on the Kimberly School Board where he served as president. He also served on the Bean Growers Board and the Labor Camp Board.
Upon retirement, Dad and Mom became "Snowbirds" and enjoyed many sunny winters in the South in their motor home. The rest of the year, he took great pleasure in his main hobby which was the mechanical restoration of antique engines, tractors and farm machinery. One could always find him at the Twin Falls County Fair, exhibiting his engines and talking with fair-goers about how these "single-pop" engines worked and how they were used.
He delighted in watching his grandchildren grow up. He enjoyed attending their recitals and sports events and was always proud of their numerous accomplishments.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, LaVon; and one brother, Harold. He is survived by his seven sisters: Donna Patrick, Jeanette Fenoli, Virginia Estep, Rosemary Easter, Rita Thaemert, Ann Ochsner Schenck and Dorothy Meyers. He is also survived by his six children: Bruce (Kathy) Bulcher, Linda Bulcher, Doug (Betsy) Bulcher, Rod (Brenda) Bulcher, Mark (MarJean) Bulcher and Rhonda (Darlene) Bulcher; plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at 5:30 in the evening Sunday, Jan. 25, at White Mortuary, followed by the praying of the rosary at 7 p.m. Dad's funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with a luncheon to follow. Please stay for the lunch to visit with family and friends.
